Born and raised in Florida, a lifelong Episcopalian, Dan Smith was ordained a priest in 1982. He received a B.A. in History from the University of Central Florida in 1978. He received a M.Div in 1981 from Nashotah House Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 2001.
Smith has served as church planter and rector of parishes in Florida, Hawaii, and Iowa, and as Canon to the Ordinary in the diocese from 2003 - 2015. Smith's doctoral dissertation studied the care and pastoring of a traumatized congregation, particularly after a clergy person had been removed for sexual misconduct. Smith consults for the wider church in this topic and other areas of congregational development.
Dan Smith met his wife Evelyn while in college and has been married for 33 years. The Smiths have two grown childen and grandchildren which they adore. Smith is an avid reader and a fan of old movies, college football and any kind of baseball. He enjoys cooking, outdoor activities including bicycling, and states he is always happy with a fishing rod in his hands.
